Simone Bell and Alex Wan spent their evenings huddled with supporters at election watch events in Candler Park and Midtown. As results trickled in, the buzz turned to excitement and eventually celebration.
Both candidates made history. With her win the District 58 state House race, Bell (top photo) will become the second openly gay member of the Georgia General Assembly. Her win Tuesday also makes her the first African-American lesbian elected to a state legislature in the U.S.
With his victory, Wan (bottom photo) becomes the first openly gay and Asian-American man elected to the Atlanta City Council. In winning the District 6 post, he also will add to the 12-year run of a gay person representing the City Council district.
Bell joined supporters at the Phillip Rush Center in Candler Park to watch results and later claim victory. Wan rallied with supporters at a packed Cowtippers in Midtown.
