SoVo, David Atlanta face uncertain future
The woes of Southern Voice and David Atlanta continue to get ink.
The latest is a piece in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution that equates the federal receivership of the publication’s owner to bankruptcy and a blog post by a former editor of the gay media outlets. Creative Loafing, like the AJC, SoVo and David faces its own financial troubles, chimed in yesterday.
The future of two publications that serve Atlanta’s gay community may be in doubt because of a federal takeover of assets belonging to the company that owns them.
Southern Voice, a weekly newspaper, and David Magazine have been under the control of the Small Business Administration since August, when a federal judge forced their New York City-based owner, Avalon Equity Fund, into receivership, a form of bankruptcy.
Chris Crain—who co-founded Window Media in 1997 and headed the company’s editorial operations for more than a decade—discussed the federal action in a post on his blog, Citizen Crain. (Avalon is the majority owner of Window Media, which publishes Southern Voice and other gay publications. It also owns Unite Media, which publishes David Atlanta, among others.)
The news about Avalon is still fresh, although the receivership actually occurred way back in August 2008, and there will be more no doubt to report. At this point, it’s unclear whether the troubled status of the money source behind these eight gay publications will trickle down or not. I’ll let you know more when I do.
Throughout the media coverage of the federal receivership, officials with Avalon, Window and Southern Voice have offered no public comment even after a dozen phone calls and emails from the AJC.
