Atlanta Bucks fine tune their scrums [photos]
It seems like just a few days ago that the Atlanta Bucks were swooning over rugby stud Ben Cohen during his swing through town. But that was so yesterday; now, the gay rugby squad is scrumming its way to a new season of bumps and bruises.
So the club gathered its new recruits and veteran players on Saturday for Fall Rugby 101. It’s a rite of passage for the squad, which hosts the skills primer a few times a year. How serious is the club about tuning up on their road to the Bingham Cup next summer? Serious enough to have just held their Summer Rugby 101 about a month ago, Spring Rugby 101 in March and another in January.
The Bingham Cup was created in 2002 to honor Mark Bingham, a gay rugby player from San Francisco who died in the 9/11 terrorist attacks. The Bucks found it tough going in the 2010 tournament, but won their mid-tier Bowl division in 2008 and received their trophy from Bingham’s mother.
On Saturday, the Bucks practiced at Coan Middle School in Kirkwood. Later, they topped off the day of training with an after-party at Frogs. On Aug. 20, the club hosts its monthly Bucks Bar Night at Eagle.
