Couple assaulted in Atlantic Station gay bashing
A gay couple was attacked as they were walking in Atlantic Station on Saturday night after an unknown assailant approached them and asked the men if they were gay.
The couple was walking on 17th Street apparently heading to the Fenuxe Fire Party at the former Fox Sports Grill on 19th Street. Police say an unknown man approached the two gay men and asked about their sexual orientation.
“When the couple replied yes [they were gay], the male punched one of them in the face, then fled on foot,” Carlos Campos, an Atlanta police spokesperson, says in an email.
Officers responded to the scene and the victim was later treated for his injuries at Grady Memorial Hospital, according to sources familiar with the incident.
The LGBT liaisons for Atlanta police were notified of the incident, but no additional details were available on Sunday, Campos says.
UPDATE: A friend of the victim says the man was alone when he was attacked. He was treated at Emory University Hospital Midtown.
