First cut: Sing For Your Life Top 12 [photos]

The debut of Atlanta’s highly anticipated, gay-organized and queer inclusive Sing For Your Life reality-style competition got underway at Jungle on Thursday with the Top 12 unplugging for the Stripped challenge.
The acoustic challenge proved a great way to introduce the singers and feature the true ferocity of their pipes. Host Sarah B. (top photo, right) kept theings moving, and mentors Barry Brandon, JL Rodriguez and Michael Robinson put the singers through their paces. The Week 1 guest judge was Tara Simon, Atlanta’s own “X Factor” contestant.
An unvarnished blow-by-blow review by David Atlanta says Adam Horne’s take (watch video) on Robyn’s “Dancing On My Own” stole the show. Unfortunately, it also says that Elliot Alexzander’s (photo, left) performance of “Uninvited” by Alanis Morissette, while the best song choice of the night, landed the competition’s most unique contestant in the judges’ Danger Zone bottom two. After the a cappella Sing For Your Life round, Alexzander became the first singer to be sent packing.
The competition continues with a fresh challenge each Thursday until there’s a winner. The remaining 11 competitors take on Diva Week on Jan. 17 with a guest performance by Eryn Woods.
