Gay Atlanta photog needs a few good ‘Heroes’

Like the sexy “Heroes + Villains” in his comics-based photography series, Atlanta’s Philip Bonneau wants to take over the world. He’s getting there fast but seeks a few good cohorts to realize his master plan.

After taking gay Atlanta by storm with “Heroes + Villains Issue #1” last year and the popular sexy gay super heroes of “Issue #2” and its packed opening reception in April, the photographer and his slick, high-end concept on a short, self-funded budget have garnered attention from national sources like The Advocate and the gay comics site GeeksOut.

So for “Issue #3,” he’s thinking bigger. But like any good hero, Bonneau knows when to call for backup. His Kickstarter page seeks donations from fans of his work to help him take it to the next level.

“The creative scope of Issue #3 requires more than the shoestring budgets that worked for Issues #1 and #2,” Bonneau says. “It is going to require more creative costumes, props, make up and better equipment to push this concept. Determination and goals go a long way, but not always all the way.”

We already told you about Bonneau’s casting call for the next “Heroes + Villians,” in which he’ll throw a gender-bending twist into his hot-outcasts-for-equality plot, expand the genres of characters he depicts, and throw in high fashion and modern art elements to boot.

“Issue #3 is a show for everyone who was told they could not or should not be a certain character due to social conformity,” the photographer says. “This show allows for the models to embrace the chance to be those characters they were denied and is proof you can be anything you want to be, if you have the confidence to be yourself.”

The online funding drive ends on June 16. It has gained more than $7,000 so far but won’t be funded if Bonneau doesn’t reach is $12,907 goal by the deadline.
