‘Protect Your Monster’ comic gets moving

Atlanta’s sex-positive “Protect Your Monster” safe-sex comic strip series was already a growing local gay phenomenon. Now the weekly strip-turned-book benefiting HIV charities transforms again, this time to animated PSAs.

For the uninitiated, “Protect Your Monster” follows Harry the one-eyed monster – wink wink, nudge nudge – who always wears his raincoat or other protective gear. His friend Woo-Hoo the monster – because females need to stay protected, too – was introduced more recently.

The strips, bumper stickers and other paraphernalia are kid-friendly enough in their imagery and plays on words – including the gayest Easter pun ever – but meaningful and funny enough to reach adults who really need to get the message in a non-threatening way.

Now creator Richard Marshall’s longtime dream of animating the series is becoming reality. With the help of graphic animators Fooksie, the first 20-second “Protect Your Monster” PSA (above), “Contain the Explosion,” was released on the world Friday and word is spreading via social media and the help of HIV non-profits.

When we got to know the man behind the monster, Marshall’s individual strips (top photo) running in David magazine since 2010 had just become an e-book and paperback, which is available at Brushstrokes.
