Two Hotlanta Softball teams win national crowns

imageTwo gay softball teams from Atlanta are bringing home the gold, ending a two-year drought by winning World Series crowns in recent national tournaments in Chicago and Philadelphia.

Ten teams from the Hotlanta Softball League headed to post-season play – eight men’s teams to the Gay Softball World Series in Chicago, which wrapped up Sept. 3, and two teams to the ASANA Softball World Series, which ended Aug. 27. Just two teams scored success: The Atlanta Venom took the A Division crown of the men’s tournament, while Gamma won a share of the C Division title of the women’s tournament.

The championships are the first from HSL teams since Gamma Lite took a women’s crown in the D Division in 2009 and the Atlanta Riptide won the A Division in 2007. Two men’s teams—the Venom in the A Division and the Wet Demons in the C Division—won the Gay Softball World Series in 2007.

HSL ended its season in July with its Commissioner’s Cup and later, toasted its season winners before they headed to post-season play.

What did that mean to you, non-sporty gay? The end of Sundays full of jocks and jockettes sweating it out during all-day play at Southside Park, the hunky Wet Demons sobering up, a lack of drag queens playing ball in Piedmont Park, no more beer bustsexcept for the one on Saturday – and the need to wait until next summer before the league’s studs dress it up and strip it down for the Mr. and Miss Hotlanta Softball League contests.
